Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence

Learn about resources and organizations offering support for people who have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence. Many resources support people of all or multiple genders. Some resources offer programs specifically for children and youth.

Atira Women’s Resource Society

Atira Women’s Resource Society is a community support and resource centre serving women (trans and cis) who have experienced violence in their lifetime. They also provide some programs for children and youth.

  • "Stopping the Violence" program: Free, one-on-one counselling or support groups for women (trans and cis) who have experienced violence in their lifetime.
  • “The Family Project: PEACE” program: Counselling for children and youth who have experienced, or been exposed to, violence, with additional information for caregivers.
  • Counselling and supports include crisis intervention, safety planning, coping strategies, and referrals to other services.
  • “Maxxine Wright Community Health Centre”: Counselling for women (trans and cis) who are pregnant or have children under 6 months old at the time of intake, and are also impacted by violence, abuse, and/or substance use. Once intake is completed, the program can support women until their children turn 4 years old.
    • Centre also offers referral services; access to social worker, assistance with housing, income assistance, and forms; medical, nursing, and dental care; donated childcare items.
  • When can I access these resources? Most services drop-in on weekdays except Mondays. For Mondays or any days, it’s recommended that you contact ahead of time to confirm service availability.
